The Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl Board of Governors is pleased to introduce
Matthew Trombly as their 2024 Vermont Head Coach.
Matthew Trombly comes to the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl from Hartford High School.
Matt was born and raised in Springfield, Vermont and attended Springfield High School. After high school, Matt traveled to Cleveland, Ohio to attend John Carroll University, graduating in 1999 with a degree in
Physical Education. He began teaching in Ohio, and then moved back to Vermont to start his tenure
in Hartford.
Matt currently teaches Physical Education, and Strength and Conditioning at the high school
to grades 9-12. He began his coaching career under mentorship of the legendary Mike Stone, and
assumed the role as Head Coach upon Stone’s retirement. While serving as the Varsity Head Coach,
he also oversees the youth and middle school football programs in Hartford.
Over his career, Matt has coached in eight Division 1 Championship games, winning 6 times.
Most recently, he completed an undefeated regular season and was runner up for the Division 1 title.
He has coached in the North/South All Star game twice, and this will be his second time coaching in the Shrine game, with this being the first time as the Head Coach.
Matt is proud to be a part of this special game, which is so much bigger than football. It is a chance
to support a great cause and teach our young athletes about giving back.
He currently resides in White River Junction with his wife Aimee, daughter Paige, sons Colby and Ryland, and Brayden who will compete in this year’s game.

Assistant Coaches
Coach Tom McCoy - VT Offensive Coordinator
In 2019, Coach McCoy was named as Head Coach of Burr Burton Academy Bulldog Football team. Prior to that he was the Defensive Coordinator for 6 years. Since joining in 2014, the BBA football program has gone 83-17, with 5 undefeated regular seasons in league play, 7 League Championships, 2 D2 State Championship Titles (2015, 2018), and 2 D1 State Championship Titles (2019, 2023). In his first year as Head Coach, Tom was named by the VT Chapter National Football Foundation Hall of Fame Coach of the Year D1. In 2019, BBA Offense averaged 49.4 points per game. BBA Joey McCoy was named VT Football Gatorade Player of the Year in 2019, Jack McCoy in 2023, Griff Stalcup in 2016, and Jake Stalcup in 2011. Tom was selected to coach the VT Shrine team in 2020, however, the game was cancelled due to Covid. Tom was the Assistant Coach for the South All Star Team in 2022 and the Head Coach in 2023. Tom started coaching youth football in 2005 and has been a long-time Board Member/ President of the Equinox Valley Youth Football Club in Manchester, VT. In 2018, he was recognized with the VT Youth Leader Award and was inducted into the VT Chapter National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. Tom lives in beautiful Manchester, VT with his wife Beth and three sons, Jay, Joe, and Jack. He is a retired VT State Trooper of 26 years. Tom is passionate about building relationships with his players and mentoring great young people that will become successful at life's many challenges. He believes that if you surround yourself with great people, great things will happen! |
Coach Jim Oakman - VT Offensive Line Coach
Coach Oakman is a native Vermonter that has lived his entire life in Poultney. He played football all 4 years at PHS, and in college. His love of football is evident after 52 years of coaching and becoming a Certified Interscholastic Football Coach through NFFHS. From 1972-2010, Jim was assistant football coach under Dean Houghton and Dave Capman at PHS. 2010-current, he has been coaching at Burr and Burton Academy under Jason Thomas and Tom McCoy. In 1974, Jim was a Shrine coach under Dean Houghton, and in 2013 under Jason Thomas. In 2003 he coached in the North/South game under Dave Capman. In 1996 Jim started the Youth Football program in Poultney and coached the Poultney Catamounts from 1996-2000 in the NYFL League. Jim has been a part of 5 VT State Championship HS football coaching staffs - PHS - 2005, BBA - 2015, 2018, 2019, 2023. He has won a State Championship in every Division. Jim recently retired after 35 years with the NY State Department of Corrections. For the past 20 years, he has been umpiring HS softball. Jim is the proud father of Jamie, Kathryn, and Meredith, and an even prouder grandfather of Chase, Bryce, Charlotte, Connor, Hayley, and Hannah. Jim enjoys his family and spends his free time watching his grandchildren play football, basketball, hockey, cheerleading, and theatre. Jim loves the game of football and is passionate about teaching his players lifelong skills that will help them be successful. |
Coach Chad Pacheco
Coach Pacheco is currently the Head Football Coach at Brattleboro Union High School. In 2004 he was an unpaid assistant coach at BUHS. In 2005 he came on board as the Assistant Coach until 2014 under Charlie McLoughlin, Bill Miller, Mike Hatt and John Callahan. Also during that time he was the Head JV Football Coach. From 2015 to present, Chad has been the Head Football Coach at BUHS. In 2019, Chad helped lead Brattleboro to its first state championship in 46 years. Chad has been an Assistant multiple times in the Vermont North/South All Star Game, he was the Head Coach of the South team in 2019, and the Head Coach for the Vermont team in the 2021 Shrine game. The opportunity to help raise money and give to children in need during difficult times is a true honor. This game has had a huge impact on the children and their families and we look forward to continuing that tradition. I feel honored for the opportunity to coach this team and be a part of this long standing tradition of the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. |
Coach Tim Porter
Coach Porter will start his 10th year of coaching the Defensive Line as well as assisting with the Offensive Line at Hartford High School this Fall. Tim came to the Hurricane varsity after spending 5 years with the Hartford Minicanes youth football team as head coach. He was proud to lead his original 4th grade team to an eventual State Championship as high schoolers in 2016! A veteran football and lacrosse coach in both VT and NH, Tim has spent over 25 years coaching both Offensive and Defensive Line for Hanover (NH) - winning 5 State Championships in that time, and sending numerous “hoggies” on to play at the college level. Tim was a part of the winning NH Shrine team that beat VT in 2005. Tim is a 1983 graduate of Gettysburg College where he earned a BA in Business Management and played lacrosse as well as football. He and his wife Lynn, a Hartford elementary teacher, reside in the Village of Quechee in Hartford, VT. |
Coach Tyler Pearce
In 2019, Coach Pearce joined as a coach for Burr and Burton Academy. He was happy to be a part of the coaching staff that won BBA's first Division 1 State Title. Tyler played for BBA from 2010-2014 as an offensive and defensive lineman under Head Coach Jason Thomas and Line Coach Jim Oakman. Tyler now assists Jim Oakman coach the line at BBA. This year (2023) was Tyler's first year as Head JV Coach, as he went 6-0 with the JV Bulldogs, as well as with the J's. He was a part of BBA's 2023 State Title. |
Coach Toure Christie - VT Running Back Coach
Coach Christie has spent the last 10 years in VT becoming a leader, mentor, and friend to the southern VT community. For the first 5 years he coached the Stratton Winter Sports Club Snowboard team, building relationships with the athletes and their families. He also participated with the Northshire Special Olympics Basketball team teaching warm-up drills, and joining the unified team for a few games and tournaments. In 2019, Toure joined Burr and Burton as the Running Backs Coach and Scout Team extraordinaire. He helped that 2019 team secure a second State Championship in a row and the first Division 1 Championship in the school's history. Toure also coaches the BBA Snowboard team, who is coming off their 5th straight State Championship in a row. He currently teaches Personal Fitness at BBA and, with his coaching responsibilities, he doubles as the strength and conditioning coordinator for the BBA football team. Toure loves the game of football and shines brightest when he is engaging with his athletes on the practice and playing field. Football, athletics, and passing on knowledge have always been a staple in his life, and he is extremely excited to continue working with such an amazing group and community.
